Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino has claimed that there are plans to attack him ahead of the burial of the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Raila Odinga.
In a statement shared on his social media pages on Friday, the vocal legislator alleged that he is aware of the individuals behind the alleged plot but chose not to disclose their identities. He appealed for calm and urged mourners to ensure that Odinga is given a peaceful and dignified send-off.
“There are plans to attack me on or before the day of Baba’s burial. I am aware of the culprits behind the scheme. It is my prayer that we give Baba the befitting send-off that he deserves devoid of unwarranted violence,” Owino wrote.
Owino’s statement comes as thousands of Kenyans continue to pay their last respects to the late opposition chief, whose body has been lying in state at the Nyayo National Stadium. Mourners from across the country have been flocking to the venue to view the body and honor the political icon, fondly known as “Baba.”
The burial of the former Prime Minister is scheduled for Sunday in his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County. The ceremony will be conducted in accordance with the traditions of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), to which Odinga was a member.
Security agencies are expected to maintain tight surveillance during the funeral to ensure peace and order. Several national leaders and foreign dignitaries are also expected to attend the high-profile ceremony.
Babu Owino, known for his close association with Odinga, called on supporters to remain peaceful and focus on celebrating the life and legacy of the late ODM leader, who was a towering figure in Kenya’s struggle for democracy and justice.
