On Saturday evening, Nairobi Governor aspirant and Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino, took to social media to flag a doctored video falsely portraying him as attacking ODM leader Raila Odinga. The video, according to Owino, was manipulated to create a misleading narrative ahead of Raila’s campaign for the African Union (AU) Chairperson position in 2024.
The original footage was recorded during a rally in Suna East Constituency in 2024. Owino clarified that his remarks in the rally were directed at President William Ruto, criticizing what he described as “exorbitant taxes on basic goods.” However, the video circulated online had been edited, splicing sections together to make it appear as if the negative comments were aimed at Raila.
“In my actual address, I urged Raila to continue championing the rights of Kenyans, especially against excessive taxation. I have always supported Raila and ODM,” Owino stated. He added, “Baba, before you go to AU, please organise one more protest so we finish this man (Ruto).”
The MP emphasized that the manipulation of the footage was a deliberate attempt by political rivals to distort his stance and sow confusion among Kenyans. Over the past months, Owino has consistently opposed the Kenya Kwanza administration while supporting collaborative initiatives under the 10-point agenda Memorandum of Understanding signed between UDA and ODM.
Political analysts note that video manipulation has become a growing concern in Kenya’s digital landscape, particularly during election campaigns and high-profile political events. Owino’s clarification highlights the importance of verifying sources before drawing conclusions from viral content.
By sharing the unedited video, Owino aims to set the record straight and reassure his supporters of his unwavering commitment to Raila Odinga and the ODM, while maintaining his criticism of policies from the Kenya Kwanza administration.
