Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has stirred political debate within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), hinting he may challenge the party’s newly confirmed leader, Oburu Odinga, for the top position.
Speaking on Saturday during ODM’s 20th anniversary celebrations at Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa, Babu expressed frustration over being left out of key party positions when the National Governing Council (NGC) confirmed Oburu and his deputies during a special sitting on Thursday.
“Leaders, mliangalia huyu Babu Owino mkaona hawezi tosha kiti yoyote?” he asked, drawing loud cheers from supporters.
Despite feeling sidelined, Babu was warmly received thanks to ODM Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who intervened to ensure he could address the crowd. Babu lamented, “Nimejua hawa wadosi wetu hawatanikaribisha hapa tena. Wacha niongee kwa sababu Raila alipokuwa mzima, nilikuwa nachukua hata one hour ya kuongea.”
Sifuna clarified the invitation was meant to appease disappointed youth leaders after Babu missed a previous meeting with student leaders across the Coast.
While congratulating the new leadership, Babu subtly signaled his ambition for the top post. Addressing Oburu, he said, “Youth leader, nakuheshimu lakini hapo mbele hata Babu ametosha party leader… kama kuna tabu ana jawabu la ajabu.” He added his familiar campaign slogan: “Bila Babu, tabu.”
During Thursday’s NGC session, Oburu Odinga was confirmed as ODM party leader, with Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, Kisii Governor Simba Arati, and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi as his deputies. Other key appointments included Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga as national chairperson and Kisumu Woman Rep Ruth Odinga as deputy organising secretary.
Babu’s remarks have reignited discussion about generational change, internal party inclusivity, and succession dynamics within ODM. His public assertion of capability signals a growing youth-driven push for leadership renewal in the party.
