Former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala on Friday paid a visit to Mama Ida Odinga to offer condolences following the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. In a gesture rich in cultural significance, Balala presented her with a camel a gift traditionally associated with honour, respect, and solidarity in Kenya’s pastoralist communities.
During his visit, Balala described Raila Odinga as a towering figure whose political journey transformed the nation. “Earlier today, I joined fellow Kenyans in mourning and offering my heartfelt condolences to Mama Ida Odinga following the passing of Raila Amolo Odinga. I also presented a camel as a traditional gesture of comfort and solidarity,” he stated.
Balala noted that Raila’s leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) went beyond party politics, shaping a movement that expanded democratic space and empowered the marginalised. He urged Kenyans to reflect on Raila’s life and legacy, emphasizing the importance of carrying forward his vision of a more inclusive and democratic Kenya.
“As we reflect on his remarkable life, let us carry forward his vision of a Kenya where every citizen is heard, respected, and empowered. May his example inspire future generations to serve with courage, compassion, and dedication to the common good,” Balala said.
The camel, rarely seen in political condolence gestures, symbolizes resilience, wealth, and long-term support. Its presentation signifies a deep commitment to stand with the bereaved family, providing comfort and reinforcing the sense of a supportive community.
Balala’s visit joins numerous tributes from leaders across the political spectrum who have acknowledged Raila’s decades-long fight for multiparty democracy, equitable governance, and human rights. Leaders have presented gifts such as cows and bulls in addition to Balala’s camel, demonstrating solidarity and respect during this period of mourning.
Raila Odinga is widely regarded as a statesman whose sacrifices including years of detention without trial helped lay the foundation for the freedoms and democratic institutions Kenyans enjoy today.
