The race to replace the late William Cheptumo in the Baringo Senate has gained momentum. Nine candidates have declared interest in securing the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket ahead of the upcoming by-election.
The seat became vacant in February following Cheptumo’s death. Since then, the ruling party has been preparing to nominate a candidate who will represent it in the November poll.
UDA Nominations Set for September
The party has scheduled its primaries for Saturday, September 20, 2025. With less than two weeks left, aspirants are making last-minute efforts to win voter support.
The nine hopefuls are:
- Kiprono Chemitei
- Wycliffe Kipsang
- Daniel Kipto
- Reuben Chepsongol
- Evans Mudulel
- Joseph Cheruto
- Silas Tochim
- Isaac Kirikmet
- Linus Kamkaket
Speaking at a campaign event, Kiprono Chemitei expressed confidence. “Personally, I’m well prepared, and I have the people behind me,” he said.
Electronic Voting in Focus
UDA has announced that the primaries will be conducted electronically. This is a shift from past nominations that were manual. However, some aspirants claim they are yet to be briefed on the exact process.
A candidate remarked: “We are waiting for our nominations. We know the party is well prepared. The National Elections Board is always ready.”
IEBC Sets By-Election Date
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has confirmed that the by-election will take place on November 27, 2025. The winner of the UDA ticket will face competitors from other parties in the contest.
DP Kindiki Assures Fair Process
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has promised a credible process. He urged residents to back UDA’s candidate during the by-election.
“I assure you the nomination will be free and fair. I will fully support the winners so we can retain the seat,” he said.
The Baringo race is expected to draw significant attention, given the county’s influence in Rift Valley politics.
