The race for the Nairobi Governor seat is gaining momentum as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) reshuffles its political deck ahead of the 2027 General Election. Makadara MP George Aladwa has emerged as a key contender after receiving a strong endorsement from a section of ODM grassroots officials and delegates.
Aladwa, the ODM Nairobi chairman and former Nairobi mayor, was endorsed during a meeting held last week, following the relocation of Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi to Bungoma, where he is expected to vie for governor. Wanyonyi had been the party’s preferred choice to challenge incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Aladwa’s endorsement signals a realignment in ODM’s Nairobi strategy. Delegates, including ODM Nairobi vice-chairman Ochieng Jera, Women’s Branch chairperson Catherine Akoth, and Youth leader Stanzo Omungala, praised Aladwa for his loyalty, experience, and deep understanding of Nairobi politics. “He remains the most loyal and experienced leader in ODM,” said Paul Oyimba, Kamukunji ODM chairman.
Aladwa’s political base is bolstered by his Maragoli roots in Vihiga and his ability to mobilize the large Luhya voting bloc in Nairobi, second only to the Kikuyu community. Nearly one million Luhyas reside in the city, making their support pivotal.
While Aladwa has backed the emerging Ruto-Raila cooperation, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino—also eyeing the seat—has been critical of the alliance. His confrontational stance against President William Ruto’s administration may hinder his chances of securing the ODM ticket. Sources suggest Owino may consider running as an independent.
Governor Sakaja faces a complicated path to re-election. Though he maintains ties with both Ruto and Raila, ODM appears intent on fielding its own candidate, a move that could destabilize any bipartisan support Sakaja hopes to gain. Speculation is rife about the possibility of Sakaja switching allegiance to ODM to strengthen his position.
As the ODM camp awaits direction from Raila Odinga, the endorsement of Aladwa marks a critical step in the party’s preparations for a high-stakes battle in the capital city.
