A major drug bust has rocked Homa Bay County. Authorities seized bhang worth Sh5 million during a raid in hostels used by university students.
The operation also led to the arrest of two suspects. Police further recovered cigarettes valued at about Sh100,000.
How the Raid Happened
The sting took place earlier this week in an estate known to house many university students.
The multi-agency team included officers from:
- NACADA
- The Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU)
- The Administration Police
The coordinated raid targeted traffickers believed to be selling drugs to students.
NACADA’s Warning
NACADA CEO Anthony Omerikwa said the crackdown is a warning to drug dealers.
“We will not allow our universities to be turned into breeding grounds for addiction and crime,” he stated.
He added that the agency will continue targeting drug networks operating near campuses.
Rising Student Drug Use
The raid comes after a NACADA report revealed worrying numbers.
- Over 30% of university students admitted to using cannabis.
- Nearly 40% reported regular use of alcohol and tobacco.
- Access to narcotics near campuses has increased sharply in the last three years.
Omerikwa warned that the statistics are a “national crisis” and called for urgent action to protect young people.
What Happens Next
Local authorities in Homa Bay have promised more surveillance. They urged students and residents to report suspicious activity.
NACADA confirmed more raids will take place in other hotspots across the country.
The latest operation highlights how deeply drug cartels have infiltrated student communities. At the same time, it shows the government’s renewed push to dismantle the networks fueling addiction among the youth.
