Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is rebranding himself as the moral face of Kenya’s opposition, taking a bold stance in defending youth protesters and positioning for a presidential run in 2027.
The former Vice President, long regarded for his diplomatic style, has emerged as a passionate defender of young Kenyans caught in the state’s crackdown on dissent. Since the Saba Saba protests on July 7, Kalonzo has actively led a team of lawyers in court to secure the release of dozens of youth facing terrorism-related charges, a move seen as part of his wider strategy to connect with Gen Z a key voting bloc in the next general election.
Joined by DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa and prominent advocates like Ndegwa Njiru and Kibe Mungai, Kalonzo has turned court appearances and funerals of protest victims into platforms for political advocacy. His legal activism, including support for jailed journalist James Mbochi and boda boda rider Stanley Mbuthi, has showcased a more combative and emotionally resonant side of his leadership.
At funerals for victims such as Boniface Kariuki in Murang’a and 12-year-old Bridgit Njoki in Kiambu, Kalonzo condemned police brutality and called out government silence. His message of justice and electoral integrity is resonating among disillusioned youth.
Kalonzo has also assumed the mantle of “Leader of the People’s Loyal Opposition” following ODM leader Raila Odinga’s rapprochement with President William Ruto. He has refused any dialogue with the government, labeling it a “rogue regime” and promising unwavering support to activists like Boniface Mwangi.
His engagement with Gen Z protest leaders, including abduction survivors Billy Mwangi, Bernard Kavuli, and Peter Muteti now aspiring politicians — signals a deeper strategy to integrate youth voices into his 2027 campaign.
Political analyst Herman Manyora notes Kalonzo’s outreach is smart but warns it must translate into real inclusion. Kalonzo, however, appears committed, repeatedly calling Kenya’s youth the “vanguard of the Third Liberation.”
As the 2027 race heats up, Kalonzo’s reinvention could make him a formidable challenger one with compassion, conviction, and a finger on the youth pulse.
