Police in Bungoma have arrested a nurse working at a private health facility over allegations of raping a 16-year-old Form Three student who had been admitted for malaria treatment and wound dressing.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Martin Wekesa, was reportedly caught in the act by a colleague conducting ward rounds on Friday night. According to initial reports, the nurse allegedly forced himself on the minor while she was under medical care.
Bungoma South Police Commander William Letting confirmed the arrest, stating that officers acted immediately upon receiving the report. “Police officers walipopata hio report mara moja wakaenda kwa hiyo hospitali na wakadhibitisha kisa hicho na pia wakamshika huyo mshukiwa ambaye tuko naye hapa korokoroni. Tumefungulia mashtaka na anangoja kupelekwa kortini,” he said.
However, the victim’s family has accused the facility of attempting to cover up the incident. The student’s mother, Peninah Barasa, alleged that staff instructed the minor to bathe after the ordeal, potentially tampering with crucial evidence. “Mtoto alituambia huyo daktari alimvuruta na akamvua hizo nguo… lakini the following morning walimwambia mtoto wetu aingie bafu aoge. They are trying to conceal the evidence,” Barasa claimed.
The incident has sparked outrage in Bungoma, with residents demanding justice and stricter measures to protect minors from sexual violence. Commander Letting expressed concern over the rising cases of defilement in the county, warning that such offenders will face the full force of the law.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete. Meanwhile, the victim is receiving medical attention and counseling support.
Authorities have urged parents, guardians, and communities to remain vigilant and report cases of sexual abuse promptly to ensure swift justice for victims.
