The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has intensified its enforcement drive against illegal courier services, shutting down several unlicensed operators in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area. The operation, conducted jointly with the National Police Service, targeted firms suspected of flouting licensing regulations governing the courier industry.
During the raid, officials seized parcels, receipts, and consignment books believed to have been used in the illegal businesses. Several suspects were detained and are currently being held at California Police Station, awaiting arraignment at the Makadara Law Courts.
According to the CA, the crackdown is part of an ongoing effort to safeguard consumers and streamline Kenya’s fast-growing courier and logistics sector. “Unlicensed operators pose risks to consumers, including loss or mishandling of parcels, lack of accountability, and potential security threats,” a CA official said.
The enforcement sweep netted eight companies operating without the required authorization. Among those affected were Al-Safa Parcel Services, Falcon Fastforward, Turkana Parcel Services, and Ramadhan Parcel. Authorities noted that the companies had been operating in densely populated commercial zones, taking advantage of high demand for parcel delivery services in Eastleigh.
The CA emphasized that courier businesses must obtain proper licensing to operate legally, as stipulated under the Kenya Information and Communications Act. Licensed providers are subjected to compliance checks that ensure adherence to service quality, safety, and consumer protection standards.
Industry observers note that the proliferation of unregistered couriers has been fueled by the rise in e-commerce and informal trading, particularly in urban hubs like Eastleigh. However, while demand for affordable and quick delivery services is growing, the regulator insists that consumer safety cannot be compromised.
The CA has vowed to sustain nationwide enforcement to weed out illegal players and warned members of the public against engaging unlicensed couriers. Consumers are advised to confirm the legitimacy of service providers by checking the CA’s official register of licensed operators.
The crackdown underscores the government’s resolve to clean up the sector, protect businesses that comply with regulations, and restore order in Kenya’s courier industry.
