A wave of public outrage is sweeping across the country following the disturbing death of 21-year-old Albert Ojwang’, who died in police custody after allegedly being arrested over a social media post. Diplomacy Analyst Ahmed Hashi has joined the chorus of voices demanding accountability, urging Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to resign over his silence on the matter.
Speaking on Citizen TV on Monday, Hashi questioned the absence of top government officials in addressing the tragic incident. “The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Police Commissioner should have been there. When this happens to a citizen in this way, then all our lives are in danger,” he said. He emphasized that such a death under state custody casts doubt on the credibility and integrity of security institutions entrusted with citizens’ safety.
Albert Ojwang’ was reportedly arrested on Saturday afternoon by police officers in Kakot, Homa Bay County. Authorities claimed they were investigating him over a post he made on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). However, soon after his arrest, reports emerged that Ojwang’ had died while in custody, sparking anger among Kenyans online and in civil society.
Hashi further criticized the government for what he termed “a complete breakdown of leadership and accountability.” “The Minister of Internal Security should be out today to tell this country what happened or he should just vacate his office and leave, because we do not know what’s going on in this country anymore,” he added.
Human rights organizations and legal experts have condemned the arrest and detention of individuals over online expression, terming it a violation of the constitutional right to free speech. Many are now calling for an independent investigation into Ojwang’s death and the prosecution of officers involved.
The incident has intensified scrutiny of the Kenya Police Service and the Ministry of Interior, with citizens demanding reforms to prevent extrajudicial actions. The government is yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
As pressure mounts, the public continues to await answers and justice for Albert Ojwang’.
