Canada-based TV host and businesswoman Lucy Jeffrey has officially announced her intention to contest the Westlands parliamentary seat in Kenya, marking a significant shift in her political ambitions. In an exclusive interview with Kenyans.co.ke, Jeffrey revealed she had decided to drop her political pursuits in Canada to focus entirely on Kenya’s political landscape.
Jeffrey, who has lived in Canada for nearly two decades, highlighted her desire to bring a new level of accountability and service delivery to Kenyan politics. Drawing comparisons between governance in Canada and Kenya, she emphasized the need for more structured, citizen-centered leadership. “Canada’s political system prioritizes accountability and public service. Kenyan politics has brilliant minds but often struggles with delivery and transparency,” she said.
The aspiring MP noted that one of the biggest contrasts is the accessibility of leaders. In Canada, she explained, Members of Parliament regularly engage with constituents and operate open-door offices, something she hopes to emulate if elected in Westlands.
Jeffrey is looking to succeed Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, who is reportedly considering a move to contest the Bungoma parliamentary seat. Her decision to focus on Westlands is deeply personal, having spent a significant part of her upbringing in the constituency before relocating abroad.
While some critics may question her long absence from the country, Jeffrey remains confident that her international experience is an asset. “I have gained so much knowledge in Canada that, if I am given a chance, I can use it to change our country for the better, starting with my constituency,” she asserted.
Previously, she had been in the process of registering a political party in Canada, but she clarified that her shift to Kenya was not an abandonment but a redirection. “I realised that even if I became an MP in Canada, I would not have the time or emotional space to serve Kenya the way I’m being called to now,” she said.
Lucy Jeffrey plans to fully relocate to Kenya by 2027 and hopes to bring a new vision of leadership to Westlands, grounded in accountability, transparency, and people-first governance.
