Isiolo police have launched investigations into a shooting incident and acts of vandalism that marred Thursday’s impeachment motion against Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo. The violence unfolded at the Isiolo County Assembly, leaving one man injured and prompting calls for justice.
Barack Abdullahi, 26, is currently receiving treatment at Almasi Medical Centre after allegedly being shot in the ankle. He claims that the Speaker of the County Assembly, Mohamed Roba, fired at him from a vehicle bearing the county flag as it departed the assembly premises. According to Abdullahi, he attempted to flee after spotting the firearm but collapsed and later woke up in hospital.
Dr. Abdikadir Mohamud, a surgeon at Almasi Medical Centre, confirmed that a bullet lodged in Abdullahi’s ankle was removed through surgery. Preliminary analysis suggested the injury was caused by a small-calibre firearm fired at close range.
The incident occurred during chaotic scenes following the tabling of the impeachment motion, which sparked tensions among supporters and opponents of Governor Guyo. In the ensuing unrest, unknown individuals stormed the assembly premises, vandalised two vehicles, smashed windows, and reportedly made away with furniture and other property.
Isiolo Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Mwendwa confirmed the ongoing investigation, noting that authorities are working to identify those responsible for the destruction and theft. Regarding the shooting, Mwendwa urged caution, emphasizing that a report filed by Abdullahi’s relative only described the shooter as an “unknown individual.” He added that a personal statement from Abdullahi is still pending, which is crucial for the investigation to proceed.
Despite the police’s official position, Abdullahi’s family has been vocal, insisting that Speaker Roba was responsible. His sister, Asley Salad Mohamed, has called for a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure justice is served.
In response to the allegations, Speaker Roba, via his official WhatsApp line, said, “The burden of proof lies with the accuser. Let the police do their job.”
Tensions remain high in Isiolo as residents await the outcome of the investigations.
