Panic gripped patrons and staff at a popular hotel in Kericho town on Thursday night after a rogue police officer, allegedly intoxicated and aggressive, threw a teargas canister into the premises, leaving a trail of chaos and trauma.
According to eyewitnesses, the officer dressed in civilian clothing and said to be attached to a nearby police station entered the hotel accompanied by a woman. What began as a normal evening quickly turned into turmoil when the officer started harassing diners who were peacefully enjoying their meals and tea.
Hotel staff and patrons confronted the officer, demanding identification and reasons for his disruptive behavior. Rather than calming down, he became belligerent and attempted to assault some of the staff. Witnesses say he had to be physically restrained and removed from the premises.
In a shocking escalation, the officer threatened to return with a firearm and “deal with” those who had challenged him. He then left the hotel on a boda boda, leaving many to believe his threats were hollow.
However, to the disbelief of many, the officer returned minutes later armed with a teargas canister. Without warning, he hurled it into the crowded hotel. The canister exploded, releasing clouds of choking gas that filled the room instantly.
A wave of panic swept through the establishment. Some customers dove under tables, while others stampeded toward exits, believing the attack involved gunfire. Those caught inside struggled to breathe, coughing, sneezing, and gasping for air as chaos reigned.
Witnesses say the officer quickly fled the scene again on a second boda boda, disappearing into the night.
By Friday morning, no official statement had been issued by the Kericho County police leadership, further angering residents who have called for swift disciplinary action and justice for the victims.
Several affected patrons received first aid, while others sought medical attention for exposure to the gas. Many are now demanding a full investigation into the incident and questioning how a trained law enforcement officer could act so recklessly in a public space.
