President William Ruto’s daughter, Charlene Ruto, on Tuesday paid a condolence visit to the Odinga family home at Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County, following the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Charlene began her visit by laying flowers and paying her respects at Raila’s grave in Kang’o ka Jaramogi, where she was received by the late leader’s son, Raila Odinga Junior. She later proceeded to Opoda Farm, where she was warmly received by Mama Ida Odinga, whom she comforted and condoled with on behalf of her family.
The visit by Charlene Ruto underscores the spirit of unity and respect across Kenya’s political divide that has characterized the mourning period following Raila’s death. A steady stream of national leaders, from both government and opposition, has been making their way to Bondo to offer condolences to the Odinga family.
Among the early visitors was President William Ruto, who attended Raila’s burial on October 19, 2025, describing the former Prime Minister as a “towering statesman who dedicated his life to democracy and unity.” The President added that Raila’s passing marked “the end of an era,” and that his courage and sacrifices would remain a guiding light for future generations.
Other high-profile visitors have included former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Azimio la Umoja leaders, governors, senators, and Members of Parliament. Uhuru eulogised Raila as “a patriot who put the country above self,” while Azimio leaders praised his lifelong dedication to justice and good governance.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, religious leaders, diplomats, and ordinary Kenyans have also visited the homestead, reflecting the deep respect Raila commanded across all walks of life.
Despite the somber mood, Mama Ida Odinga has continued to express gratitude for the overwhelming messages of support, saying the love and solidarity from Kenyans have provided the family with strength during this difficult period.
