President William Ruto’s daughter, Charlene Ruto, has joined Kenyans in mourning the death of Albert Ojwang, a young Kenyan who died in controversial circumstances while in police custody. Charlene described the loss as “painful, unfortunate, and overwhelming,” using the moment to advocate for national reflection and unity among the youth.
Speaking at the conclusion of a youth leadership forum in Nairobi on Friday, Charlene led 106 young leaders in observing a minute of silence in honour of Ojwang. “As we concluded this week’s cohort on leadership conversations, I requested the 106 young leaders present to stand with me and observe one minute of silence for the life of Albert Ojwang,” she said.
Charlene revealed that she has spent recent days in deep reflection, attempting to make sense of the tragedy. She extended her condolences to Ojwang’s family, expressing solidarity with all who are grieving. “This is a painful, unfortunate and overwhelming loss. We share our deepest condolences with his family,” she stated.
Ojwang reportedly died at the Nairobi Central Police Station last Sunday, under unclear circumstances. He had been arrested at his home in Homa Bay, taken to Mawego Police Station, and later transferred to Nairobi. Reports suggest that he was facing charges related to publishing defamatory content on social media.
Charlene used the platform to urge young people and leaders across the country to consider the broader implications of such incidents. She called for a “generational ceasefire” and an end to rising intolerance. “These regrettable incidents, extremity, and growing intolerance should challenge all of us to interrogate the environment and culture we want to live in, and create for the generations coming after us,” she urged.
Ojwang’s death has sparked widespread public concern and calls for accountability, with many questioning the manner of his arrest and subsequent death in custody. Charlene’s appeal reflects a growing desire among Kenyan youth for justice, peace, and a renewed national dialogue focused on protecting civil liberties and ensuring safe civic engagement.
