Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has dismissed the chances of a united opposition defeating President William Ruto in the 2027 elections. Speaking on a local TV station on Thursday, September 25, 2025, Cherargei asserted that even if prominent politicians such as Kalonzo Musyoka or former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i entered the race, Ruto would still prevail, especially with the backing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“And I want to assure him (Senator Maanzo), bring Kalonzo Musyoka, bring former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, of course, that one is impeached, he will never run, bring Matiang’i, whatever, I can tell you President Ruto will wipe them with the flow clean with the support of Raila Odinga,” Cherargei said.
His remarks come shortly after Raila hinted that ODM might field a presidential candidate in 2027. Cherargei further argued that the opposition is currently fragmented and lacks a clear agenda beyond opposing the President.
“There is a thing called united opposition; what we have is fragmented opposition who do not have an agenda. Their only agenda is to fight the president,” he added.
Cherargei’s comments follow a TIFA survey released on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, which indicated that a majority of Kenyans expect Raila to support President Ruto’s re-election bid. The survey showed that 32% of respondents believe Raila will back the incumbent, while 39% expect him to rejoin the opposition, whether by contesting himself or supporting another candidate.
The findings underscore Raila Odinga’s enduring political influence and its potential impact on the 2027 elections. According to the survey, nearly half of those opposed to the “BBG” (presumably Ruto) believe Raila could rejoin the opposition by 2027, reflecting the polarized expectations surrounding his political moves.
Cherargei’s forecast reinforces the narrative that, with Raila’s support, President Ruto’s path to victory could remain unchallenged, leaving a fragmented opposition with limited leverage in shaping the next general election.
