The Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK) has called on churches and believers across the nation to unite in prayer for the family of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, whose death has plunged Kenya into deep mourning.
In a pastoral letter issued on Thursday, the alliance described Raila as “a statesman, reformer, and African icon whose life and service have left an indelible mark on Kenya and beyond.” The EAK urged Christians to lift up the Odinga family in prayer, especially Mama Ida Odinga and their children, asking that God grant them comfort and strength during this difficult time.
“May the God of all comfort surround them with His unfailing love and give them peace that surpasses all understanding,” the letter read.
Signed by EAK Chairman Bishop Philip Kitoto and General Secretary Rev Kepha Nyandega, the statement encouraged Kenyans to remain calm, united, and steadfast in faith as the nation mourns one of its most enduring political figures.
The alliance further called for national reflection, urging believers to pray not only for the Odinga family but also for the entire country. “Let our sanctuaries and homes become altars of intercession, crying out to the Lord for Kenya to remain steadfast, united, and anchored in His grace,” the EAK said.
Quoting the Gospel of Matthew “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” the letter reminded Christians that even in grief, their hope remains in Christ.
Raila’s body arrived from India on Thursday, accompanied by his daughter Rosemary Odinga, who handed his iconic white fedora hat to Mama Ida upon arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
A funeral service is scheduled for Friday at Nyayo National Stadium, followed by public viewings in Nairobi and Kisumu, ahead of his burial in Bondo on Sunday.
