Chief Justice Martha Koome has joined Kenyans in mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a patriot whose love for Kenya transcended politics.
In a heartfelt message of condolence, Koome said she received the news of Raila’s passing with “profound sorrow and deep sadness,” noting that the country had lost one of its most consequential and visionary leaders.
“Kenya has lost a statesman whose name is forever etched in the annals of our democratic journey,” Koome said. She extended her condolences to Mama Ida Odinga, the Odinga family, and all Kenyans, joining the nation in mourning a man who shaped Kenya’s political and democratic identity.
The Chief Justice described Raila as a towering figure who stood “at the confluence of history and destiny,” praising his courage, sacrifice, and conviction that held together the fragile threads of Kenya’s democracy.
“Throughout his illustrious life of public service, the Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga embodied the spirit of resilience and the audacity of hope,” she said.
Koome credited Raila with expanding Kenya’s democratic space, anchoring principles of equality, justice, and accountability that continue to guide governance today. She further praised his unwavering commitment to inclusive leadership and women’s empowerment, describing him as “a true believer in the recognition of women as equal partners in shaping Kenya’s political destiny.”
She also lauded Raila’s enduring contributions to the rule of law and constitutionalism, which she said “inspired democratic movements across Africa.”
“His life’s work calls upon every Kenyan to remain vigilant in defending the freedoms for which he so tirelessly fought,” Koome emphasized, urging the nation to carry forward Raila’s vision of unity, equality, and justice.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
