The Council of Governors (CoG) has called an extraordinary meeting to deliberate on Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga’s remarks following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.
In a statement on Tuesday, CoG Chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi, who is also the Governor of Wajir, said the council was deeply disappointed by Kahiga’s comments, which appeared to suggest that Raila’s death would “free” government resources for the Mt Kenya region.
“As the Council of Governors, we disassociate completely from Governor Kahiga’s sentiments,” Abdullahi said, describing them as “reckless, insensitive, and unfortunate.” He added that such remarks were “inhumane and unacceptable to celebrate a national leader’s death.”
Abdullahi hailed Raila as a statesman and the “architect and protector of devolution,” emphasizing that his legacy transcended politics. “We as a nation owe him immense respect—both in life and in death,” he noted.
The CoG meeting, scheduled for Wednesday morning, will discuss possible disciplinary action against Governor Kahiga.
Raila Odinga, Kenya’s longest-serving opposition leader and a champion of democracy, was laid to rest in Bondo, Siaya County, in a state funeral attended by President William Ruto and leaders from across the political spectrum.
