The government has declared Friday, October 17, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, who passed away while receiving treatment in India.
In a special gazette notice No. 15007, Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration Kipchumba Murkomen made the announcement under Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act (Cap 110).
“It is notified for the general information of the public that in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary declares Friday, the 17th October, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the departed former Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga,” the notice read.
A state funeral will be held at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday, where national leaders and dignitaries are expected to pay their last respects to the veteran opposition leader and democracy icon.
Flags across the country have been flying at half-mast since Wednesday following confirmation of Odinga’s death. Condolence books have also been opened in government offices, embassies, and ODM party offices nationwide.
Preparations are ongoing to receive Raila’s body from India. A national funeral committee, co-chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, will oversee burial arrangements in consultation with the Odinga family.
According to DP Kindiki, Odinga wished to be laid to rest within 72 hours of his passing, but logistical challenges have slightly altered the timelines. The funeral programme includes public viewings in Nairobi, Kisumu, and Bondo, Siaya County.
CS Murkomen said the government will work closely with the Odinga family to ensure a dignified send-off befitting his stature as a national leader and champion of democracy.
The public holiday will be observed across Kenya, with national and county flags continuing to fly at half-mast until the day of his burial.
