Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has come out strongly in defense of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Leonard Muthende, dismissing allegations of voter bribery in the Mbeere North by-election.
Speaking during a public engagement in Riandu, Ruku rubbished claims made by former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti, who had accused the government of using state resources to sway the electorate.
“Nobody is buying votes,” Ruku asserted. “The people of Mbeere North are supporting Leonard Muthende because they believe in his vision and leadership, not because of handouts. Kivuti should stop misleading the people with baseless propaganda.”
The CS accused Kivuti of resorting to diversionary tactics in a bid to discredit the ruling party and its preferred candidate. He further took a swipe at Kivuti’s political record, noting his failed attempts to clinch the Embu governorship.
“Instead of hurling accusations, Kivuti should reflect on why he has failed twice in his quest for the governor’s seat. Leadership is about connecting with people and building trust,” Ruku said in a veiled jab.
On claims of government neglect in Mbeere North, Ruku pointed to ongoing infrastructure projects, including the tarmacking of a major road passing near Kivuti’s home.
“How can someone claim the government is doing nothing when a road starting right at his gate is being tarmacked?” he posed, terming the remarks both misleading and laughable.
Ruku urged residents to remain vigilant against what he described as politically motivated narratives aimed at dividing the community. He rallied support for the Kenya Kwanza administration, assuring locals that development projects would continue across the constituency.
The Mbeere North by-election has drawn intense political attention, with UDA banking on Muthende to consolidate its influence in the region while rivals challenge the ruling party’s growing dominance.
