Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has called for calm and patience amid ongoing investigations into the death of Albert Omondi Ojwang, who allegedly sustained fatal injuries while in police custody.
Speaking on Monday, Wandayi conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Ojwang’s family and friends, acknowledging the emotional weight of the incident while urging the public to avoid drawing premature conclusions.
“First and foremost, I must extend my condolences to the family and friends of the young man, Albert Ojwang,” Wandayi stated. “As we speak, we are not privy to all the details surrounding his untimely and unfortunate demise.”
According to reports, Ojwang died after allegedly sustaining head injuries while in police custody. Police have claimed he hit his head against a wall, but the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. The National Police Service issued a preliminary statement on Sunday confirming that an official investigation is underway.
Wandayi emphasized the importance of allowing the investigative process to proceed without interference, cautioning against speculation. “It is important to appreciate that the government, through the National Police Service, issued a preliminary statement… We understand that investigations are still ongoing,” he said.
The CS commended the police for taking initial disciplinary action, including the suspension of officers believed to have been involved or to have had knowledge of the incident. “I must commend the police, because they have taken a commendable first step by suspending key officers… who could have taken action or were aware of the happenings,” he noted.
Wandayi further appealed to the public and Ojwang’s family for patience, acknowledging the emotional nature of the case while underscoring the need for facts. “Usually, when such incidents occur, they evoke a lot of emotions naturally. Until we fully understand the circumstances… it is difficult to comment with authority.”
As the investigation continues, the government has pledged transparency in establishing the truth surrounding Ojwang’s tragic death.
