Kenyan authorities now believe Juja MP George Koimburi orchestrated his own abduction to avoid imminent arrest over a land case, according to revelations made by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Police Service.
In a detailed briefing on Wednesday, DCI Director General Mohamed Amin said detectives have gathered compelling evidence suggesting the May 25 abduction was a hoax. Police allege that Koimburi, with the help of close associates, faked the kidnapping shortly after attending a church event at Full Gospel Church in Mugutha, Kiambu County.
Three individuals, said to be close confidants of the MP, have been arrested and reportedly confessed to their roles in the staged abduction. Investigators have also recovered two vehicles believed to have been used in the operation.
Amin outlined two key theories motivating the scheme. “One, the Member of Parliament was very aware that we were seeking him over two offences. The first involves a land matter that had already been investigated, forwarded to the DPP, and sanctioned for prosecution,” he said.
The second theory, according to Amin, is political. “We are also reading an element of politics, possibly aimed at causing fear and anxiety in the country,” he added.
Police have reconstructed a timeline showing Koimburi’s movements from the church service to when he was “discovered” in a coffee farm. They claim he spent Sunday night in a hotel and even tore his shirt with the help of an accomplice to simulate torture.
Amin dismissed the notion that Koimburi was harmed, suggesting instead that the MP might be enjoying the comforts of Karen Hospital, where he is currently admitted. “It’s quite inconceivable for a Honorable Member of Parliament to go to such lengths, creating tension and fear in the country,” he remarked.
Efforts to question Koimburi have been hampered, with investigators being denied access to interview him in hospital. Nevertheless, the DCI maintains it has mapped out his movements and remains confident in its case.
As the investigation continues, the incident raises serious questions about political theatrics and abuse of public trust.
