The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced significant progress in the probe into the brutal murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Ongóndo Were, who was gunned down in Nairobi on April 30.
In a statement released on Friday, the DCI revealed that detectives have identified potential suspects after reconstructing the MP’s final movements from Parliament to the scene of the fatal shooting near the City Mortuary roundabout.
“This detailed analysis has yielded significant leads, enabling investigators to narrow down to potential suspects. While the motive for this heinous act remains under investigation, preliminary investigations suggest that this was a targeted and premeditated act,” read the DCI statement.
The sleuths said they are pursuing all possible angles and called on the public to remain calm and avoid speculation. Authorities further appealed to citizens with any relevant information to report to the nearest police station or use toll-free lines: 999, 112, or #FichuaKwaDCI (0800 722 203).
Were was shot at approximately 7:30 p.m. by unknown assailants riding on a motorcycle. According to eyewitness accounts, a motorbike carrying two individuals approached the MP’s vehicle, and the passenger disembarked, fired several shots at the passenger side, then fled the scene on the motorcycle.
The MP’s driver and a male passenger, both of whom escaped unharmed, rushed the wounded legislator to Nairobi Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
In a troubling revelation, it has emerged that the MP had earlier expressed concerns about his safety and had appealed to security agencies for protection, alleging he was being trailed.
The National Police Service, in a separate statement, also confirmed the attack appeared to be both “targeted and predetermined,” a conclusion that aligns with the DCI’s findings.
The investigation remains ongoing as the nation mourns the loss of a sitting MP. Authorities have pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure accountability for the shocking murder that has left the country in grief and disbelief.
Anyone with helpful information is urged to come forward to aid the investigation.
