The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has withdrawn from the Mbeere North parliamentary by-election scheduled for November 27. The party has thrown its support behind the Democratic Party (DP) candidate.
Party leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced the decision on Wednesday. He said the move is aimed at building strong relations with like-minded partners within the United Opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We have agreed that DCP will support the Democratic Party in Mbeere North constituency. This seat was previously held by DP and should rightfully be retained by their candidate,” said Gachagua.
He also praised DP leader Hon Justin Muturi, describing him as a capable leader with “undoubted leadership qualities” to win the seat.
Seat Became Vacant After MP’s Cabinet Appointment
The Mbeere North seat fell vacant after incumbent MP Geoffrey Ruku was appointed by President William Ruto as Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Human Capital Development on March 26, 2025.
DCP’s withdrawal comes shortly after its former candidate, Duncan Mbui, left the party. Mbui announced that he would run as an independent, accusing DCP of being a “members’ club” and undermining his political ambitions.
“I have always been independent and shall win as an independent,” Mbui said on social media, using his KivuiKivui campaign slogan.
DCP Supports Other Parties in Local Wards
Gachagua also revealed that DCP will support the Wiper Party candidate in Muguuni ward, Machakos, and the DAP-K candidate in Kapchai/Chwele ward, Bungoma.
He emphasized that for other elective positions, DCP will field candidates and campaign under its party banner.
Upcoming By-Elections
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has scheduled 16 ward by-elections. Parliamentary contests will take place in Banissa, Kasipul, Magarini, Malava, Mbeere North, and Ugunja constituencies. A senatorial by-election in Baringo County is also set for November 27.
