The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has strongly condemned remarks made by Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen regarding the chaotic disruption during the party’s official launch on May 15, 2025. Murkomen alleged that the individuals involved in the disturbance had been invited and promised money, a claim that DCP has labeled as “reckless and baseless.”
In a statement released on May 16 via its verified X account, DCP expressed shock over Murkomen’s assertions, calling them not only false but also dangerously irresponsible. The party accused the CS of attempting to shift blame and undermine its legitimacy amid growing political momentum.
The disruption occurred at DCP’s headquarters along Musa Gitau Road in Lavington when a group of rowdy individuals attempted to force their way into the venue. The situation escalated quickly, leading to a melee that injured three journalists covering the event. According to eyewitness accounts, security personnel linked to party leader Rigathi Gachagua fired shots into the air to disperse the intruders.
Murkomen claimed the chaos was triggered by unpaid supporters of Gachagua, stating that preliminary investigations revealed a dispute over promised payments led to the melee. He further advised political leaders to engage the National Police Service when organizing public events to ensure safety.
DCP dismissed Murkomen’s narrative as a recurring tactic to smear the party and intimidate its supporters. They drew parallels to a previous incident where alleged hired goons disrupted a church event attended by Gachagua, asserting that these acts are part of a deliberate attempt to destabilize their political rise.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic values, DCP emphasized that every Kenyan has the constitutional right to freely associate and form political parties without fear of intimidation. The party vowed not to be deterred by what it described as “sponsored hooliganism,” asserting that it would remain focused on its vision for a better, united Kenya.
The incident came just a day after the DCP’s launch, which reportedly saw the registration of over one million members within 24 hours, signaling significant political traction. Despite the disruption, DCP remains determined to press forward with its agenda.
