Nairobi City County has raised concern over a new drug that is putting young lives in danger.
Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria has warned parents about the drug, which is being abused by children across the city.
The drug and its effects
The substance, known on the streets as “whites” or “blues”, is extremely addictive. It is only supposed to be used under strict medical prescription in mental health facilities.
However, Mosiria says rogue pharmaceutical shops are now selling it secretly to children.
Once consumed, the drug can cause:
- Severe hallucinations
- Disorientation
- Zombie-like behavior depending on the dosage
“I have personally seen many young people on the streets already affected. If we don’t act, we risk losing an entire generation,” Mosiria said in a social media post.
Call for action
Mosiria has urged the Pharmacies and Poisons Board to work with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to crack down on the illegal sellers.
He added that the county is also working with NACADA and other agencies to fight the crisis.
Parents urged to stay vigilant
The county official appealed to parents and guardians to monitor their children closely.
Signs to watch out for include:
- Sudden changes in behavior
- Hallucinations
- Abnormal conduct
“Do not rush to link these conditions to witchcraft. Early medical attention can save lives,” he stressed.
One life already saved
Mosiria revealed that the county has already rescued one young man who had consumed the drug mixed with tea.
“This is a serious threat to our youth. We must remain vigilant and protect our children from this deadly substance,” he concluded.
