Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya has led the nation in mourning two Kenya Air Force pilots who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash during a routine training mission in Kwale County.
In a heartfelt condolence message to the bereaved families, CS Tuya hailed the deceased as gallant officers who selflessly served the country. “These two airmen gave their lives in the line of duty, demonstrating immense bravery and dedication to their calling. Their loss is a painful reminder of the risks our military personnel face each day to keep our skies safe,” Tuya said.
According to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), the fatal incident involved a Grob 120A aircraft that developed an emergency during a standard training flight. The plane went down in the vicinity of Mwakijembe Primary School, within Mafundani village, Kwale County. Both pilots on board perished in the crash.
The KDF confirmed the loss through an official statement, expressing deep sorrow over the tragic event. “With deep sadness, we confirm the passing of both pilots in the crash. Kenya Air Force has constituted and dispatched investigation teams to establish the cause of the air crash,” read part of the statement.
The Grob 120A aircraft is typically used by the Kenya Air Force for pilot training and is considered reliable. However, mechanical or operational issues, which are now under investigation, may have led to the incident.
Local residents reported seeing the aircraft flying unusually low moments before hearing a loud explosion. Emergency services were quick to respond, cordoning off the area and commencing recovery and investigation efforts.
CS Tuya and the KDF extended their heartfelt sympathies to the families, friends, and colleagues of the fallen pilots. “May the Almighty Lord rest the souls of the departed heroes in peace and grant their families fortitude at this time of deep sorrow,” the KDF statement concluded.
As the country awaits the results of the crash investigation, the tragic loss serves as a somber moment for the military and a reminder of the sacrifices made by those in service.
