Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hailed remittances from Kenyans living abroad as the backbone of the country’s economy, underscoring their vital role in national development. Speaking during his visit to the United States his first international trip since being ousted from office in October 2024 Gachagua expressed deep appreciation for the Kenyan diaspora, describing them as candid, hardworking, and patriotic.
“I want to say that there are many things that we shall discuss and implement. However, as I have told you, you are the backbone of the Kenyan economy. I have every intention of keeping that cow happy,” Gachagua said metaphorically, stressing the importance of maintaining strong relations with the diaspora community.
In a light-hearted remark, he even joked that he would consider introducing country music to appeal to the diaspora if it helped sustain the inflow of funds into the country. “Even if it is getting country music, it’s going to happen because we need money to grow our economy, and the money is with you guys,” he added.
Gachagua emphasized that honest and practical engagement with Kenyans abroad is essential in sustaining remittance flows, which have become increasingly critical to Kenya’s economic resilience amid fiscal challenges and rising debt levels. According to recent data, diaspora remittances are among Kenya’s top foreign exchange earners, surpassing earnings from key exports like tea and horticulture.
The former DP also took the opportunity to reflect on the state of the nation, voicing concern over widespread discontent among Kenyans both at home and abroad. “I am deeply concerned by the pain every Kenyan in every corner of the world has on the direction our beloved Nation is taking,” he stated, citing the frustration he has heard from diaspora communities regarding governance and economic mismanagement.
Gachagua noted that the candid views and hope expressed by diaspora Kenyans have reinforced his resolve for political engagement and reform. He reiterated the Democratic Change Party’s (DCP) commitment to championing the aspirations of ordinary citizens at home and in the diaspora.
