Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Kenya Police Service, Eliud Lagat, on Friday conducted an inspection tour of Makupa Police Station in Mombasa County, as part of a nationwide assessment of service delivery and operational readiness across police facilities.
During the visit, Lagat inspected critical areas of the station, including the report office, holding cells, and the traffic section. According to a statement by the National Police Service (NPS), the DIG identified several gaps requiring urgent attention to improve efficiency and service to the public.
After the inspection, Lagat held an engagement session with officers stationed at Makupa, where he discussed a broad range of issues affecting their work. The discussions touched on welfare, mental health, and financial management—areas the DIG noted are key to boosting morale and ensuring professionalism within the service.
He commended the officers for their dedication but challenged them to remain steadfast in upholding the values of integrity, accountability, and transparency. “Officers must steer clear of corruption, be accountable for their individual actions, and serve the public with dignity,” read part of the NPS statement.
Lagat further emphasized the need for unity in the fight against crime, urging the police to work closely with communities to strengthen trust and cooperation. He reassured officers that the service remains committed to progressively improving their working conditions, enhancing welfare, and providing adequate resources to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.
The DIG also underscored the priorities of Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, who has placed emphasis on transforming police stations and other service areas into centres of excellence. The goal, Lagat noted, is to create environments where citizens can access justice and security without fear or intimidation.
The inspection of Makupa Police Station comes at a time when the police service is undertaking reforms aimed at restoring public confidence and ensuring professionalism within its ranks. By reinforcing the principles of integrity and accountability, the NPS hopes to build a police force that embodies service to all Kenyans.
