Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Eliud Lagat, on Saturday visited Mandera County as part of his ongoing familiarisation tour, focusing on assessing the security situation in the region.
Lagat, who was accompanied by senior police officials from Nairobi, held a closed-door meeting with top security chiefs in the county. The discussions reviewed recent developments in law enforcement and strategies for sustaining peace in an area that has in the past grappled with insecurity challenges.
Speaking after the meeting, Lagat assured Mandera residents that the overall security situation remains stable. He noted that there have been no significant incidents reported in recent weeks, a sign that joint efforts between security agencies and local communities are bearing fruit.
“Clan clashes, which have in the past threatened the peace and stability of this county, have significantly subsided,” Lagat said. “In fact, we have recorded no new cases recently. This is a testament to the commitment of our people to live harmoniously.”
The DIG urged communities, especially those living in historically volatile areas, to maintain peace and uphold the rule of law. He emphasised that every Kenyan, regardless of their location or ethnic background, has the right to live in peace and security.
“We will continue working closely with local leaders and residents to ensure that the gains we have made are not reversed,” Lagat stated. “Anyone attempting to disrupt the peace will be pursued and brought to justice without exception.”
Lagat’s visit, his first to Mandera County since assuming the position of DIG, was described as both symbolic and practical — aimed at fostering trust between security agencies and the local population. Security officials in the county pledged their continued cooperation with the national command to ensure Mandera remains safe for all.
Residents welcomed the reassurances, with community representatives expressing optimism that the renewed focus from the top police leadership would help address lingering security concerns and promote long-term stability in the border county.
Lagat is expected to continue his familiarisation tour across other counties in the region in the coming weeks, engaging both security personnel and community stakeholders.
