Police have launched a probe into claims that Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi faked his own abduction, amid a swirl of conflicting reports and political intrigue. The MP was found alive on Monday morning, lying unconscious in a Jacaranda coffee plantation in Kibichoi, Kiambu County, nearly 12 hours after his family reported him missing.
Authorities now believe the incident may have been orchestrated. Police sources claim Koimburi had been offline since Friday when an attempt to arrest him in connection with an ongoing land case failed. According to an officer familiar with the matter, Koimburi evaded arrest by abandoning his vehicle and fleeing on a motorcycle with his security detail after leaving an event in Juja.
His driver, who was later apprehended and interrogated at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), revealed that Koimburi instructed him to drop him off after learning that he was being sought by police. Koimburi resurfaced on Monday morning, dressed in the same navy blue suit he wore on Sunday, and claimed to have been abducted and assaulted.
Eyewitnesses, including his wife Ann Koimburi, said the MP was seized by two plain-clothed men pretending to be worshippers outside a church in Kiambu. Ann said she was injured while trying to rescue her husband, who was dragged into a waiting Subaru Forester with an altered number plate.
Police have visited several locations including the church, the abduction site, the coffee plantation, and hospitals where the MP was treated, seeking clarity on the legitimacy of the injuries and sequence of events. Investigators are particularly interested in how individuals located Koimburi in the remote plantation.
While Koimburi insists he was kidnapped, police say inconsistencies in witness statements and his suspicious disappearance point to a staged abduction. His alleged attempt to dodge arrest raises further questions.
The unfolding saga has sparked mixed reactions from the public, with some condemning what they see as a mockery of justice and public trust. Authorities now await Koimburi’s statement as investigations into both the land case and the alleged abduction continue.
