Health CS Aden Duale has hit back at Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale over remarks questioning his qualifications to lead the Ministry of Health.
On Sunday, September 7, Duale dismissed Khalwale’s comments as a personal attack. He insisted his academic credentials were vetted and recorded in Parliament.
“Senator, my academic papers are within the precinct of Parliament and submitted to the vetting committee of the National Assembly twice. Discuss substance, not personalities. My focus is on health reforms. Period,” Duale said.
Khalwale’s Criticism
The senator made the remarks during a funeral in Mumias West on Saturday, September 6. He mocked Duale’s background, claiming Kenyans did not know whether he studied “herding camels” or a formal discipline.
Khalwale linked the challenges facing the Social Health Authority (SHA) to poor leadership. He also blamed Duale for failing to intervene in the closure of St Mary’s Hospital, which he said was hurt by delayed insurance reimbursements.
“As a doctor, I know the problems. Mr President, I am telling you what other doctors would like to say but don’t get the chance,” Khalwale told mourners.
SHA Under Scrutiny
Duale’s response comes as SHA faces growing criticism over fraud and inefficiency.
Government audits have led to the closure of 728 non-compliant facilities and the downgrading of 301 others. In June, 40 more hospitals were suspended, while 45 were flagged for de-gazettement.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has also formed a multi-agency team to probe over 1,000 fraud-related files.
Despite the criticism, Duale says his focus remains on reforms that will strengthen Kenya’s healthcare system.
