Kenya is mourning the death of Elijah Kiptarbei Lagat, a former Chesumei Member of Parliament and celebrated marathon champion. Lagat passed away on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Eldoret Hospital.
The retired long-distance runner rose to global prominence after his stunning victory at the 2000 Boston Marathon. His triumph placed him among Kenya’s most decorated marathoners of the late 1990s and early 2000s, cementing the country’s reputation as a powerhouse in distance running.
Beyond athletics, Lagat successfully transitioned into politics. He was elected twice to represent Chesumei Constituency in the National Assembly. During his tenure, he was widely praised for his commitment to dialogue, inclusivity, and community-driven leadership.
Nandi Governor Stephen Sang led tributes, describing Lagat as both a national hero and a dedicated public servant.
“Hon. Lagat was a distinguished leader whose legacy will be remembered not only in the halls of Parliament but also in the hearts of the people he served with dedication and humility,” Governor Sang said.
Sang further highlighted Lagat’s athletic achievements, recalling his Boston Marathon victory as a moment of immense national pride.
Until his passing, Lagat was serving as a board member of the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), where he played an active role in the fight against drug and substance abuse.
His death has been met with shock across both the sporting and political communities. Many remember him as a man who bridged the worlds of sports and leadership with equal passion and dedication.
Governor Sang conveyed condolences on behalf of Nandi residents, sending sympathy to Lagat’s family, friends, and the people of Chesumei.
Elijah Lagat’s legacy will live on through his achievements on the global athletics stage and his service to the people of Kenya.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
