Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has issued a bold challenge to Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, daring them to face him in a fair nomination contest for the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking amid rising tensions within the party, Wamalwa alleged that there were behind-the-scenes efforts by certain individuals to orchestrate a hostile takeover of DAP-K’s leadership. He insisted that any such ambitions should be pursued transparently through internal party democracy, not clandestine schemes.
“If you want to become party leader or presidential candidate, you are welcome to face me for the presidential ticket in free and fair nominations,” Wamalwa declared. “DAP-K is a democratic party that allows all members to pursue their political dreams through legitimate processes.”
The former Defence Cabinet Secretary reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the party’s founding values and structures, cautioning against attempts to undermine its unity. He emphasized that internal wrangles should be resolved within the party and not played out in public forums.
His remarks follow concerns raised by the DAP-K Parliamentary Group, which accused unnamed forces of plotting to destabilize the party by supporting an unconstitutional leadership change. The group expressed unwavering support for Wamalwa and warned those involved against continuing with the alleged scheme.
“We are aware of his newly formed political party and caution him against attempts to destabilise DAP-K as he makes his exit,” the group said, without naming names but strongly implying betrayal from within.
Governor Natembeya, widely perceived as the main subject of the accusations, has denied the claims. He dismissed them as baseless and reaffirmed his loyalty to the party, stating he is focused on strengthening DAP-K and expanding its national presence.
As the political storm brews within DAP-K, all eyes are on how the internal tensions will be managed, especially with Wamalwa signalling readiness for a head-on battle for the party’s top ticket. The unfolding drama is set to shape the party’s trajectory ahead of the 2027 polls.
