Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has officially resigned from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, citing ideological differences with the ruling party. Gachagua, who served as Deputy President under President William Ruto, made the announcement on Monday, revealing that the decision had been made after a realization that his ideals no longer aligned with those of the UDA.
In a statement, Gachagua explained that his resignation was a result of the UDA’s shift in direction, which he believes has steered the country away from the progressive path that was once promised. He stated, “I have made this decision in knowledge of the ideals of the Party we believed in and so were millions of Kenyans, but now has turned out as the most dangerous political moment for the people and the Republic of Kenya in the retrogressive philosophy of an unfit class to govern our Nation.”
The resignation, which takes effect immediately, marks a dramatic turn in Gachagua’s political journey. He expressed concerns over the government’s failure to deliver on key campaign promises. According to Gachagua, sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, housing, MSMEs, and the Digital Superhighway have not seen the promised advancements. These unfulfilled commitments, he argues, have stalled Kenya’s economic and social progress, undermining the country’s potential.
Further, Gachagua pointed to the government’s unfulfilled promises to uplift the country economically, socially, and politically, accusing the ruling administration of wasting an opportunity to enhance Kenya’s development. He also reiterated his commitment to the rule of law and the constitution, stressing that his decision was rooted in his patriotic duty to Kenya.
This resignation follows months of controversy, including Gachagua’s impeachment. Senators had upheld multiple charges against him, which further intensified his disillusionment with the UDA leadership. The decision raises questions about the future of Gachagua’s political career, but it undoubtedly signals a significant shift in the political landscape as he distances himself from the ruling party.
