Allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa and Nyandarua Senator John Methu on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, paid an early morning courtesy visit to the home of Acting ODM Party Leader and Siaya Senator, Dr. Oburu Oginga Odinga.
The senators were warmly received by Oburu and his wife, where they presented three sheep as a gesture of respect and solidarity. Their visit came just two weeks after the passing of Oburu’s younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who died on October 15, 2025.
In a post on his official X account, Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa shared that the visit was aimed at offering comfort and encouragement to Oburu as he steps into his new leadership role within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
“Early this morning, my brother, Sen. Methu, and I paid a courtesy call to the Acting ODM Party Leader and our colleague in the Senate, Sen. Oburu Odinga. We went to pay our respects and offer comfort, especially as he takes on the great responsibility of stepping into the late Raila Odinga’s shoes,” Karungo wrote.
He added that the meeting provided an opportunity to learn from Oburu’s wealth of experience, describing him as a source of wisdom and mentorship to younger leaders.
Senator John Methu also reflected on the visit, saying they congratulated Oburu on his appointment as the Acting ODM Party Leader and wished him success as he continues Raila’s political legacy.
The visit drew attention across the political divide, given that both Thang’wa and Methu are close allies of Gachagua known critics of the government while Oburu currently leads a party aligned with President William Ruto’s administration.
Their gesture, however, was widely seen as a rare display of unity and respect during a period of mourning, highlighting the importance of empathy beyond political affiliations.
