Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Saturday, November 1, 2025, joined mourners in Gatanga Constituency, Murang’a County, for the burial of six members of the same family who lost their lives in a tragic road accident along the Kiama River in Kariara Ward.
The six perished on October 26, 2025, when their vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the river at Wacengu Bridge. Police reports indicate the family was returning home to Ndia Village after attending a dowry ceremony in the Nazareth area of Kiambu County.
Gachagua, who was accompanied by his wife Pastor Dorcas Gachagua, arrived at the funeral clad in a black suit, while Dorcas wore a black dress with purple linings. Upon arrival, the former Deputy President approached the front where the six coffins were neatly laid out. He bowed his head in a moment of silence, paying his respects before taking his seat among the mourners.
The atmosphere was deeply somber, with many attendees visibly emotional. Despite the heavy mood, the crowd quietly applauded as Gachagua and his wife were introduced, acknowledging their show of solidarity during the tragedy.
Several leaders joined Gachagua at the funeral, including Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia, Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, and former Kigumo MP Jamleck Irungu. The leaders expressed sympathy for the bereaved family while also pledging continued political support for Gachagua ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Senator Nyutu spoke passionately in Gachagua’s defense, accusing President William Ruto of deceit and commending Gachagua for his humility and compassion.
Six other passengers survived the accident with injuries and were taken to Kirwara Hospital and Murang’a Level 5 Hospital for treatment. Authorities have since launched investigations into the cause of the crash.
The tragic incident has left the Kariara community mourning, with residents calling for improved road safety measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
