Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly condemned a violent attack that disrupted the launch of his new political outfit, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), in Nairobi on Thursday. The incident, which occurred at the party’s headquarters in Lavington, saw armed individuals storm the venue in what Gachagua described as a politically motivated effort to derail the event.
Chaos erupted as Gachagua’s security detail fired in the air to disperse the rowdy group, who responded by hurling stones. The situation quickly spiraled, leading to the assault of journalists covering the event. Three reporters were injured, and some had their equipment confiscated and footage deleted by security personnel.
In a statement posted on X, Gachagua accused his unnamed political rivals of orchestrating the violence, alleging a consistent pattern of hostility since his departure from the ruling coalition. “Today, once again, you sent goons to attack me and members of the DCP at the party headquarters,” he wrote, decrying what he termed as attempts to intimidate and silence him and his followers.
Gachagua cited several past incidents including an attack at a funeral in Limuru, an assault on his wife in Nyeri, and a teargas incident during a prayer meeting in Nyandarua as evidence of a broader campaign against him. He further accused police of complicity, claiming they had been ordered not to arrest the perpetrators.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen responded by criticizing Gachagua’s team for failing to notify law enforcement about the launch. He also suggested that unrest began after unpaid supporters caused chaos.
Despite the tensions, Gachagua remained defiant. “Like a gentleman, just accept that you lost the trust and support of the people and move on,” he stated, reaffirming his commitment to the DCP and signaling that his political ambitions remain intact.
The attack adds to growing tensions in Kenya’s political landscape as new alliances and parties emerge ahead of future elections. Gachagua has previously claimed his life is in danger, following a series of alleged politically motivated attacks since late 2024.
