Democratic for Citizen Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed claims of a growing rift between himself and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, asserting that the opposition remains united as the country gears up for the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview on KTN on October 6, Gachagua warned against what he described as deliberate attempts to divide opposition leaders through the creation of a “third force.”
“Some individuals are trying to influence opposition leaders individually, so that a third force is created to divide the opposition,” Gachagua stated, adding that Kenyans would reject any leader who breaks away from the united opposition.
He further emphasised that the opposition’s unity will be key in determining Kenya’s next president. “In 2027, whoever is chosen by the united opposition to face William Ruto will become the sixth President of Kenya,” he said.
His remarks come amid growing political realignments as leaders position themselves for the 2027 race.
Meanwhile, Matiang’i also moved to dispel rumours of internal divisions within the united opposition, which includes key figures such as Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Gachagua. Speculation had intensified after Matiang’i missed several joint political meetings, opting instead to meet youth and opinion leaders in Nakuru County.
Addressing the issue, Matiang’i acknowledged that aligning diverse visions takes time but expressed confidence in eventual unity. “Our patience, perseverance, and patriotism will be tested, but we must overcome temptations and work together as expected by Kenyans,” he said.
Matiang’i, who has declared his intent to seek the Jubilee Party presidential ticket in 2027, maintained that each leader has the freedom to choose their political platform. He also announced renewed efforts to revitalise the Jubilee Party through mass membership registration and grassroots engagement
