Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly endorsed Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, declaring him a formidable political figure with a loyal following in the Ukambani region. Addressing hundreds of residents in Matuu on Thursday, May 29, 2025, while en route to a mega rally scheduled for Friday in Machakos, Gachagua praised Kalonzo’s political clout and influence.
“Kalonzo is a serious leader, and whenever he gives political direction, his people listen,” Gachagua said, adding, “Today, I am a very happy man. I will sleep peacefully because Kalonzo has a solid base.”
Gachagua’s visit comes as opposition heavyweights unite in a show of strength against President William Ruto’s administration ahead of the 2027 General Election. The deputy president spent the night at Kalonzo’s Muuna residence in Mwingi, Kitui County, signaling growing collaboration between the two leaders.
Urging the Ukambani electorate to solidify their support for Kalonzo, Gachagua called on voters to elect Wiper party leaders across the board. “In the 2027 elections, elect all leaders in Ukambani from the Wiper party to give Kalonzo a strong base. If you elect leaders from many parties or independents, you will weaken Kalonzo’s authority at the negotiating table.”
Kalonzo, meanwhile, confirmed he had received the community’s blessing to represent them in coalition talks aimed at forming a united opposition front and selecting a joint presidential candidate. “Yesterday, I received an endorsement from my people to begin the journey to form the next government, and I am ready for the country’s top job,” Kalonzo said.
Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Eugene Wamalwa, also in attendance, praised Kalonzo for his consistency and loyalty. “If Kalonzo says he will stand with you, he will give you his full support,” Wamalwa noted.
The Machakos rally marks the first joint appearance by all major opposition leaders, reinforcing a renewed sense of unity as they seek to wrest power from President Ruto in 2027. The leaders had earlier held solidarity talks in Tseikuru, underlining their commitment to a common agenda.
