Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has reassured Kenyans that he has no concerns over President William Ruto’s recent nominations for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Speaking during an interview with Egesa FM, Gachagua emphasized that the decision of who becomes President ultimately lies with the voters, not the electoral commission.
Gachagua pointed out that the Supreme Court’s ruling in 2013 made it clear that the voter’s choice at the polling station is final. “The voter’s decision at the polling station is final,” Gachagua stated, expressing confidence that the electoral process will be fair and transparent. His remarks came shortly after President Ruto nominated Erastus Edung Ethekon as the new IEBC chairperson, alongside other commissioners, including Anne Nderitu, Moses Mukwana, and Mary Karen Sorobit, among others.
Despite some criticism from opposition leaders, notably Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who questioned the lack of consultations in the nominations, Gachagua urged his supporters to focus on registering more voters. “We want to ensure that we win the 2027 presidential election with over 7.1 million votes so that it becomes impossible for anyone to manipulate the numbers,” he said.
As Gachagua continues to align with key opposition figures in preparation for the 2027 elections, he stressed that the opposition’s strength lies in unity. He assured Kenyans that the opposition coalition will put national interests first and select a single candidate to challenge President Ruto in the upcoming race. Gachagua further stated that if the coalition’s formula favours someone else for the presidency, he would be willing to take on another role in the government.
Looking ahead, Gachagua’s commitment to a united opposition suggests a strategic approach aimed at securing a victory in the next election. As the nomination process for IEBC officials moves forward, Gachagua’s confidence in the democratic process remains steadfast, reflecting his determination to focus on the 2027 electoral outcome.
