Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has come under intense political fire from more than 30 MPs allied to President William Ruto, following his recent remarks suggesting the head of state could be a one-term president. The MPs dismissed Gachagua’s claims as empty threats, branding him a political failure lacking the influence to sway the 2027 election outcome.
Led by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, the legislators mainly from the Mt Kenya region condemned Gachagua for engaging in what they termed as tribal and divisive politics. Speaking during an economic empowerment event in Kapseret Constituency hosted by MP Oscar Sudi, Ichung’wah accused Gachagua of exploiting ethnic sentiments in a bid to regain political relevance.
“It’s no surprise we impeached him. Even his own family should be ashamed of his loose talk,” Ichung’wah said, referring to internal fallout within Kenya Kwanza.
The MPs further criticised Gachagua’s recent comments referencing the 2007/8 post-election violence, calling them reckless and insensitive. “A man who celebrates the suffering of our people cannot lead this country,” Ichung’wah asserted, adding that even without President Ruto, Gachagua would be politically defeated.
Oscar Sudi also took issue with Gachagua’s claim that government money was being misused in economic empowerment initiatives. Sudi clarified that his programme was privately funded, with support from Tanzanian friends, and accused Gachagua of disrespecting the presidency.
Finance CS John Mbadi, also in attendance, said it was shameful for a former Deputy President to spread tribalism and hate. Other MPs like Sabina Chege, Erick Wamumbi, and Reuben Kiborek echoed similar sentiments, warning Mt Kenya residents not to be swayed by Gachagua’s rhetoric.
The group pledged unwavering support for Ruto’s re-election bid, praising his national development agenda and economic reforms in sectors like agriculture. They urged Kenyans to focus on unity and progress, not divisive politics.
As the 2027 race begins to take shape, the rift between Gachagua and Ruto’s camp appears to be widening.
