Opposition heavyweights Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, Martha Karua, Justin Muturi, and Fred Matiang’i have embarked on a weeklong charm offensive across Rift Valley and Western Kenya. The rallies, which began on Monday in Narok, mark the coalition’s third major foray after similar campaigns in Ukambani and the Coast, as the opposition eyes victory in the 2027 General Election.
The team is targeting over ten counties with whistle-stop engagements, aiming to penetrate strongholds of President William Ruto’s UDA party and re-energize opposition support. The political caravan, starting in Narok and traversing Mulot and Bomet, will proceed to Nyamira and Kisii symbolic stops for Matiang’i as well as Vihiga, Kakamega, Busia, and Bungoma. The campaign will culminate on July 7 with rallies in Eldoret, Nakuru, and Naivasha, heartlands of the ruling coalition.
The rallies come amid shifting political alliances following Raila Odinga’s cooperation deal with President Ruto, which has left a vacuum the opposition is keen to fill. Gachagua and Kalonzo are presenting a united front, projecting themselves as a viable alternative to the Kenya Kwanza administration. “Time is up for this administration,” Kalonzo declared, vowing to beat Ruto at every polling station in 2027 through an organized campaign backed by real-time results from trained agents.
Western Kenya’s support is central to the coalition’s strategy. The inclusion of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, who has recently gained prominence amid graft charges, adds regional weight to the movement. His participation is seen as a signal of growing dissatisfaction with the current regime.
This week’s tour is a significant litmus test for the opposition’s ability to unsettle the ruling party in its perceived strongholds. With promises of a unified presidential candidate and tighter poll monitoring, the leaders hope to rally the country behind what they call a “rescue mission” to oust the Kenya Kwanza administration in 2027.
