Opposition leaders Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka have taken their unity campaign to the Coast region in a bid to consolidate support against President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election. The duo, once fierce rivals, began their two-day blitz on Friday in Ukambani and are now intensifying efforts to woo the coastal electorate.
On Saturday, June 7, 2025, the campaign caravan is scheduled to sweep through Voi Town, Maungu, Mariakani, and Mazeras, culminating in a major rally in Kisauni. This marks the first joint appearance by the opposition heavyweights in a region traditionally aligned with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga who recently signed a cooperation agreement with President Ruto, reshaping the political landscape.
The rallies are part of a nationwide movement aimed at unseating the Kenya Kwanza administration in 2027. The opposition leaders accuse the government of economic mismanagement and overburdening Kenyans through excessive taxation.
“We have come here with Kalonzo to start the journey of making Ruto a one-term President,” declared Gachagua in Malili, Makueni County. “We are here to declare that we are together in this mission.”
Kalonzo, for his part, promised decisive policy reversals if the opposition takes power. “Our Executive Order No. 1 will be to scrap the housing levy,” he vowed, adding that the movement will not allow any manipulation of electoral outcomes. “Even if they stuff the IEBC with their puppets, we will beat them at every polling station.”
The campaign team includes several political heavyweights, such as Eugene Wamalwa, Mithika Linturi, Richard Onyonka, Karungo Thang’wa, Dan Maanzo, Saitoti Njoroge, and Mutula Kilonzo Jr.
With pledges of a united front and a single presidential candidate in 2027, the opposition is signaling a bruising political battle ahead. The leaders said their coastal tour was just the beginning of a relentless national offensive aimed at toppling the Ruto-led administration.
