Democratic for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has announced plans to roll out a fund drive to support Gen Z protesters arrested during the recent Saba Saba demonstrations in Kenya. Speaking during a visit to Boston, United States, Gachagua pledged to share an official DCP paybill number, allowing well-wishers to contribute towards bail and legal fees for the detained youth.
Gachagua condemned the government’s heavy-handed response to the protests, especially the decision to charge some demonstrators with terrorism-related offences. He maintained that the youth were simply exercising their constitutional rights. “Our children were only standing up for what they believe in,” Gachagua stated. “These charges are unjust and aimed at intimidating a generation of brave Kenyans.”
The DCP leader emphasized transparency in the fund management, assuring supporters that all contributions, whether from local donors or the diaspora, would be used solely for their intended purpose. “Our party is credible,” he said. “Every shilling or dollar received will be accounted for.”
Gachagua urged Kenyans, especially those living abroad, to donate whatever they could. “Even $10, $20, or $100 will go a long way,” he appealed. “No one will be forced to give, but if you feel moved to help, know that your support can free our children and reunite them with their families.”
He also expressed deep gratitude to the lawyers who have volunteered to defend the protesters. “These legal professionals are walking a difficult journey with us, and their commitment is invaluable,” he said.
The fund drive comes amid growing concern over the treatment of arrested protesters, most of whom are young Kenyans. Many face steep bail terms and terrorism-related charges, which human rights organizations and opposition leaders have condemned as excessive and politically motivated.
As public pressure mounts, Gachagua’s initiative adds to the national and international call for justice, transparency, and the protection of civil liberties in Kenya.
