Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has lauded Malawi’s President-elect, Prof. Peter Mutharika, for what he termed a “historic and consequential democratic victory.” In a statement, Gachagua praised the people of Malawi for exercising their sovereign power through the ballot, calling the win “more than a national triumph” and a strong message for the continent.
“This election is a continental statement,” Gachagua said. “It is a declaration that Africa, home to 1.5 billion people, is no longer a playground for religious hypocrisy, conmanship, corruption, dictatorship, and self-serving regimes.”
Gachagua highlighted that Malawi’s citizens have reminded the world that the ballot remains the most powerful tool for liberation. He emphasized that leaders who cling to power through manipulation, propaganda, and constitutional abuse should take note.
“From Idi Amin to Mobutu, from Bokassa to Mugabe, the era of oligarchy and strongmen has collapsed under the weight of people’s power on the ballot,” he noted.
The DCP leader further encouraged Kenyans to draw inspiration from Malawi’s courage. He stressed that citizens across Africa are increasingly aware, engaged, and willing to act to reclaim their democratic rights. “Malawi has shown us that African citizens are awake. They see. They feel. They think. They act,” he said.
Looking ahead to Kenya’s 2027 General Elections, Gachagua urged citizens to reject fear and hopelessness and embrace democratic means to shape their future. He called on Kenyans to take lessons from Malawi’s example, emphasizing that courage, unity, and the power of the ballot can overcome entrenched political interests.
In conclusion, Gachagua described Malawi’s election not only as a victory for the country but as a continental affirmation of democracy, reinforcing the belief that African people hold the ultimate power to influence governance and drive change.
