Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has promised to restore security in Nairobi and across Kenya if elected president in 2027.
Speaking during a church service in Nyeri on Sunday, September 14, 2025, Gachagua painted a grim picture of the capital city. He said that criminal gangs have taken over streets, leaving residents fearful even in broad daylight.
“In Nairobi at 6:30 pm, you can’t walk around; people with guns and knives are robbing people in broad daylight. They are all over,” Gachagua said.
Security Plan
Gachagua linked the rise in crime to political gangs. According to him, many of these groups were abandoned after the elections and have now turned to violent crime.
“These gangs are used to doing politics, and now that politics is over, they have to make a living. Those gangs will be dismantled and security restored,” he explained.
He pointed to recent violent incidents, including the shooting of city lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, as evidence of worsening insecurity. He also cited the killing of a Karen resident, saying Kenyans no longer feel safe in their homes.
Gachagua promised to rescind what he called misguided directives, including President William Ruto’s order that police should “shoot suspects on the leg.” He pledged tougher measures to protect Kenyans.
No False Promises
Beyond security, Gachagua said his campaign will focus on restoring basic services rather than making unrealistic promises. He pledged to return Kenya to the standards of former President Mwai Kibaki’s administration.
“I don’t want to promise lies to the people of Kenya. We want to restore healthcare so that hospitals have drugs. We also want to restore education so that free learning is available as Kibaki left it,” he stated.
Looking Ahead to 2027
Gachagua’s message highlights two central pillars of his 2027 bid: restoring security and reviving social services. By focusing on safety, healthcare, and education, he aims to rebuild public trust and position himself as a leader of stability.
