Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed strong confidence in the judiciary, following a significant legal victory in his battle against removal from office. The Court of Appeal quashed a decision made by Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu to constitute a three-judge bench to hear the petition against him, stating that only the Chief Justice has the legal authority to do so.
The ruling marked a turning point in Gachagua’s legal fight and provided him with renewed optimism. Speaking at a church service in Juja, Kiambu County, Gachagua praised the judiciary and reaffirmed his faith in Kenya’s constitutional justice system.
“The framers of the 2010 Constitution created four levels of judicial interventionMagistrate’s Court, High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court so that if you don’t get justice at one level, you can get it at another,” Gachagua said. “In those courts, we have judges of integrity who will give justice not only to Rigathi Gachagua but also to the people of Kenya.”
Beyond the court victory, Gachagua announced plans to launch a new political party aimed at uniting opposition forces to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election. He revealed that consultations are ongoing with prominent political figures, including former Cabinet Secretaries Fred Matiang’i, Eugene Wamalwa, and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, alongside Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua.
“I want to assure you that the coming elections are set. I am there, Kalonzo, Karua, Matiang’i, Wamalwa are there, and we will sit together and agree on one person,” Gachagua said, emphasizing unity among opposition leaders as key to defeating the current regime.
He also hinted at working with former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi, former Public Service CS Justin Muturi, and former Trade Minister Mukhisa Kituyi, signaling a broader coalition in the making.
The Court of Appeal’s ruling has raised questions about the legality of both Gachagua’s removal and the appointment of his alleged successor, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki. As the matter returns to the Chief Justice for proper bench appointment, Gachagua remains determined to reclaim his position and continue his political journey.
